5G Revolution in Turkey - 5x faster internet
Publication date: 07/04/2026
First speed tests on Turkey's new 5G networks, conducted by users of the Speed Geo 5G/WiFi app, indicate that average 5G download speeds are nearly five times higher than current 3G/4G speeds.
April 1, 2026, will go down in Turkish telecommunications history as a landmark date. Following months of preparation and a high-profile auction process, 5G technology has officially debuted in Turkey. The network's launch was celebrated by the President of Turkey himself, highlighting the strategic importance of this investment for the country’s digital development.
Initial data from the Speedgeo app, collected within a few days of the commercial launch, confirms that we are witnessing a genuine technological leap. The distribution of 5G speed tests indicates that the first stage of building the new network was executed on a grand scale; 5G has appeared not only in major metropolitan areas but also in smaller towns that serve as provincial capitals.
Spectrum Auction: Who Gained the Most?
The success of the 5G rollout in Turkey was directly dependent on the outcomes of the frequency auction, which concluded in October 2025. Operators competed for resources in two key areas: 700 MHz (coverage and building penetration) and 3.5 GHz (capacity and speed – the so-called C-Band). Turkcell secured the largest overall resource, totaling 160 MHz.
| Operator | 700 MHz Band | 3.5 GHz Band | Total (5G Spectrum) |
| Turkcell | 2 x 10 MHz | 140 MHz | 160 MHz |
| Türk Telekom | 2 x 10 MHz | 120 MHz | 140 MHz |
| Vodafone | 2 x 10 MHz | 80 MHz | 100 MHz |
Speed Leap: From 4G in Q1 2026 to 5G in April
Data collected by Speedgeo before and after April 1st provides a clear picture of the situation. In the first quarter of 2026, average download speeds across Turkish 3G and 4G networks hovered around 50 Mbps, although they began to accelerate significantly in the final days of March due to the gradual activation of the first 5G stations. The launch of all 5G transmitters on April 1st changed these statistics even further: the average speed in the 5G network alone (data from April 1st-6th) was an impressive 238 Mbps. This indicates that the new technology is currently nearly five times faster than existing 4G/LTE-based networks. The highest results were recorded in the Turkcell network (1225 Mb/s). The 5G rollout has accelerated the average mobile internet speed by 2.5 times (aggregated results for 3G, 4G, and 5G), rising from 50 Mbps in Q1 2026 to 126 Mbps in the first days of April. Such a rapid surge demonstrates a swift transition of users to the new standard.

Turkcell: The Fastest 5G Network
An analysis of Speedgeo data per operator reveals differences stemming from the allocated frequency resources. The results confirm Turkcell's advantage; after winning key frequency auctions (700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands), the company now possesses the widest spectrum in the country. The average download speed on the Turkcell network during these initial days reached 290.6 Mbps-approximately 60 Mbps higher than Turk Telekom and 94 Mbps higher than Vodafone.
