Internet speed in German cities

Publication date: 05/08/2025

We analyzed internet speeds at the end of Q2 2025 for 120 cities in Germany in the fixed internet category and 52 cities in the mobile internet category. These were cities with the highest volume of tests and with device-based location readings.

Trier is the city with the fastest fixed internet in Germany

Data on average fixed internet speeds in German cities reveals an interesting trend: the largest metropolises do not dominate the rankings.

At the top is Trier, with an average download speed of 164 Mbps. It is followed by Werl (153 Mbps) and Delmenhorst (151 Mbps). Interestingly, these small to medium-sized cities (30,000-120,000 inhabitants) clearly outperform the country’s largest urban centers.
For comparison:

  • Berlin: 112 Mbps

  • Munich: 115 Mbps

  • Hamburg: 106 Mbps

  • Cologne: only 101 Mbps

This suggests that, despite theoretically better urban infrastructure and higher technological investments, the biggest cities are not the leaders in internet speed. Possible reasons include higher network congestion and varying levels of network modernization across districts.

Cities with the slowest fixed internet speeds:

  • Alsdorf: 49 Mbps

  • Beckum and Brandenburg an der Havel: 55 Mbps

  • Neubrandenburg: 57 Mbps

These figures show that digital infrastructure development is not always uniform - often depending on local investments and network load.

Vodafone was the leader in fixed internet speed in German cities

Here is a breakdown of which internet providers delivered the fastest fixed internet in the most German cities at the end of Q2 2025:

  • Vodafone clearly dominated, leading in 86 cities

  • PŸUR came second with 15 cities

  • Deutsche Glasfaser provided the fastest internet in 5 locations

  • O2 and NetCologne led in 3 and 2 cities, respectively

Other providers such as Glasfaser Ruhr, MDCC Magdeburg, Purtel, T-Mobile, Tele, ropa, Fiflat, TeleColumbus, and vitroconnect were fastest in individual cities.

Beckum - city with the fastest mobile internet in Germany at the end Q2 2025

Mobile internet data at the end of Q2 2025 shows similar dynamics to the fixed internet category. Once again, the highest speeds are not found in the largest cities.

Top performers:

  • Beckum: 203 Mbps - the absolute leader and one of the smaller cities (36,000 inhabitants)

  • Herne: 143 Mbps - also well ahead of most major cities

  • Ingolstadt: 134 Mbps

Major cities performed only moderately:

  • Berlin: 95 Mbps

  • Hamburg: 86 Mbps

  • Munich: 110 Mbps

  • Stuttgart: 109 Mbps

  • Frankfurt: 101 Mbps

These results suggest that despite widespread 5G coverage, heavy network congestion in large cities negatively affects actual performance.

Cities with the slowest mobile internet speeds:

  • Pforzheim: 54 Mbps

  • Bremerhaven: 63 Mbps

  • Heidelberg: 66 Mbps

  • Ludwigshafen and Kassel: 67 Mbps

These are likely locations that need further investment to significantly improve service quality.

T-Mobile was the clear leader in mobile internet speed in German cities

  • T-Mobile dominated, leading in 46 cities
