5G internet in Turkey is four times faster than broadband internet

How did the 5G rollout begin in Turkey?

Turkey’s 5G network officially launched on April 1, 2026, with coverage in provincial capitals. The rollout was based on the 3.5 GHz and 700 MHz frequencies, with Turkcell securing the largest share (160 MHz), ahead of Türk Telekom (140 MHz) and Vodafone (100 MHz). The impact of this technological leap was immediately apparent: measurements taken by users of the SpeedGeo apps during the first days of April showed that average download speeds reached 238 Mbps, representing an almost fivefold increase compared to the 3G/4G network.

5G Six Months Later: A Very High and Consistent Average Speed of 239 Mbps

Six months after the debut of 5G technology in Turkey, its performance remains at a high and virtually unchanged level. Data from the SpeedGeo app from April through September shows that concerns about a drop in speed due to the growing number of users were unfounded. The average download speed was 239 Mbps, a result close to the performance recorded in the first few days after the network’s launch and, at the same time, four times higher than the Turkish broadband market average (58.5 Mbps). This demonstrates the quality of the new network.

The balance of power among operators remains unchanged: Turkcell continues to lead in speed, ahead of Türk Telekom and Vodafone. This directly reflects the operators’ spectrum allocations: a wider 3.5 GHz band translates to better performance. 

Averages for the period from April to September 2026

Analysis of the following months shows stable results. Turkcell maintained speeds in the 270-310 Mbps range, reaching 307 Mbps in September (through September 21). Türk Telekom recorded the greatest improvement, rising from about 225 Mbps in April to 273 Mbps in September, likely due to further network optimization and full utilization of the spectrum. Vodafone maintained a stable speed in the 190-210 Mbps range.

The ability to maintain such strong performance despite growing traffic (the number of 5G users increased from significantly between April and September) is due to the ongoing expansion of infrastructure and the increased density of base stations using the 3.6 GHz band. This is well illustrated by the location data from SpeedGeo’s tests: while in April coverage was concentrated around the major metropolitan areas (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa) and provincial capitals, by September the measurement network was significantly denser. Although this is obviously not an official coverage map, it accurately reflects the pace of network expansion.

Summary

Six months after the launch of 5G in Turkey, high and stable speeds (averaging 239 Mbps) have been recorded, along with a clear expansion of coverage. Turkcell maintained its leading position, while Türk Telekom recorded the most dynamic growth.
